Development of a robust, effective model of crosslingual information retrieval

Project objective

Research objectives and content Crosslingual retrieval systems manage the retrieval of documents from a multilingual document database. They take a query in one language, and return a list of relevant documents, crosslingual may be in a language different to that of the query. Existing systems depend on large amounts of hand-crafted knowledge. This project aims to combine aspects of existing methods with new, innovative approaches to develop a model of crosslingual information retrieval that minimises this reliance on hand-crafted knowledge. Each reduction of this dependency would decrease the cost of building a crosslingual retrieval system. This research is to be carried out at the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, England, under the supervision of Dr. Karen Sparck Jones, with the aim of obtaining a PhD degree. It is expected to take three years to complete. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) There would be training in research methods, time management and project management. In addition, a broad knowledge would | be acquired of the field of information retrieval. Furthermore, the skills involved in communicating with and presenting work to others would be developed. This training would provide the applicant with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in research in information retrieval within the European Community.
