Preparation and characterization of cu- and fe-zeolite catalysts for nitrogen oxide decomposition

Project objective

Research objectives and content Much interest in environmental catalysis is now focused on the development of novel catalytic reactions for depolluting NOx in lean-burn conditions. Due to the high activity showed by Cu-and Fe-exchanged zeolites in the catalytic decomposition of NO, and the influence of some parameters like local environment of the copper/iron species in the zeolites, structure of the zeolitic matrix, etc. on their catalytic behaviour, we propose a research project with the following main aims: - to prepare Cu-and Fe-zeolites following different exchange routes - to characterize the oxidation state, coordination symmetry and local environment of copper/iron species in these materials using appropriate techniques - to test the catalytic activity of some selected samples Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The project will allow the candidate to improve her knowledge on techniques like FTIR and XRD and to learn the use of new ones such as EPR, UV-Vis, photoluminiscence and Raman spectroscopies. The daily work with experts in all of these disciplines will also be very useful to the candidate. Besides, this project will allow to consolidate an already existing collaboration between the Spanish laboratory where the candidate is working now and the Italian group. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The host group collaborates with the Italian Chemical Industries ENICHEM and ENEL, both of which are very interested in this research project, and offer their laboratories for part of the research experiments to be performed.
