Project objective
Research objectives and content This project is a study of coastal upwelling and consequent transport in the ocean.Coherent eddy structures are of particular relevance with respect to coastal-shel exchanges. These eddies result from baroclinic instability of longshore current driven by upwellings. The research will focus on two important outstanding questions. The first concerns the role of the surface Ekman layer when the wind stress driving is continuous an its relationship to the equilibrium position of the upwelling front. The second addresses the role of topography on the upwelling structures. These effects will be investigated in two separate experiments. Detailed measurement will be performed by means of new methods of flow analysis. Quantitative information will be compared with theoretical studies of the instability process and new parameterizations for the coastal-shelf exchange processes proposed. Insights into such exchanges in the Black Sea will be provided. Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact) The study of coastal-shelf processes and the application to oceanographic data will broaden my experience of geophysical flows. I will also learn new experimental techniques which will help my application for a permanent research position. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Benefits to the fishery industry which depends on the motion of nutrients are expected. Similarly, insights into the off-shore transfer of pollution will be provided.
