Project objective

Research objectives and content Granular stratification is the result of size segregation occurring during the flow of a binary mixture. The heap morphology then exhibit a puzzling self stratification parallel to the surface with alternating lines made of one single specie. This novel aspect of segregation has a great impact industrial processes like ore stocking, food processing... A few recent experimental and theoretical works have been done on this subject but a better understanding of the phenomena requires ma precise investigation in order to clarify the influence of several parameters. The proposed application has two aspects: first an experimental study which will be perform with a two dimensional vertical Hele Shaw cell to determine the exact influence of flow rate, wall effects, density difference and humidity on stratification and how can these parameters modify the heap morphology ? The experimental results will then be used to perform a numerical study using a recent cellular automaton model developed at the host institution. Improvements will be added to that model particular with the consideration of binary interactions between grains. This will take into account several aspects like the difference in size, shape and surface roughness in simulations and achieve a better description of stratification. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Experience on numerical modelisation Experience in a new scientific area: dry granular media Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Stocking and transport of granular materials Direct contact with X-RS (Paris) Collaboration with Bayer AG (D) and Institut Francais du Petrole (I.F.P. - Solaize - France)
