Towards an understanding of carbohydrate recognition in aqueous media

Project objective

Synthetic skills and an understanding of intermolecular interactions are: The proposed Network aims to study the important natural process of carbohydrate recognition through investigations on synthetic model systems especially important in most areas of the chemical industry. Supramolecular chemistry is thus an excellent training ground for young researchers. The in doing so it hopes to design/discover the first truly effective synthetic biomimetic receptors for carbohydrates in aqueous media.The research proposed Network contains laboratories with a range of specialities within programme will incorporate: (a) the rational design of macrocycles with this area. A connection with industry adds a biological dimension. Young amphiphilic cavities, closely similar to the binding sites of natural scientists within the programme will be trained through collaborative receptors; (b) the discovery of pod and-type" receptors through research in their own and other laboratories, visits to industry, attendance at conferences and Network meetings, and presentation of their combinatorial chemistry; (c) combinatorial discovery through template down results. At least 1O will be supported through Network funding, and self-assembly under thermodynamic control; (d) physical-organic studies on many others will be involved in the programme relevant interactions; (e) studies at surfaces (where unusual effects are expected); and (f) searches for biological activity (through cooperation with industry). The work should lead to an improved understanding of carbohydrate recognition in nature, and to new ways of influencing biological systems. Possible outcomes are anti-infective agents, and new separation systems for glycosylated biomolecules."
