Project objective

Research objectives and content This project involves the study of biopolymer solutions. The project involves two major subtopics. Firstly a study of the dynamics of solutions of semiflexible filaments, in particular actin. We wish to understand in particular recent microrheological experiments, and how they are related to the macroscopic properties of these solutions. We believe that the results will also be useful for understanding new diffusive wave experiments being performed on actin solutions at this moment. Secondly we will study the effect of electrostatics in a model of the packing of DNA in a nematic phase where we calculate the coupling of the screened coulomb interaction to the chain fluctuations. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) A novel opportunity to combine classical polymer theory with biology, the candidate will have the opportunity to learn new skills, particularly in the area of polymer dynamics. The results will be of importance in one of the most exciting areas of soft condensed matter theory. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
