Project objective
Research objectives and content The metal-catalyzed polymerization of olefins is of outstanding industrial importance. Besides classical polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene, polyolefins that contain cyclic subunits have gained more and more interest. This is because these polymers possess interesting properties, e.g. the glass transition temperature is increased by the rigid norbornane units. Since fluorinated polymers possess also a number of advantageous properties, polymers which contain fluorinated cyclic subunits are potential materials for high-tech applications, e.g. in light-conducting fibers. The current project aims the vinyl polymerization (Ziegler-Natta) of fluorinated norbornene derivatives by means of a new class of (n3-allyl)palladium(II) catalysts. In contrast to many other transition metals, the palladium does not give rise to any ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), which competes with the vinyl polymerization. The monomers are easily accessible by Diels-Alder addition of cyclopentadiene to fluorinated alkenes. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The research I was involved in recent years was focused on basic reseach in the area of polymer synthesis. A co-operation in Dr. Risses group would give me the opportunity of improving my knowledge in an area of much more industrial importance. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The project is currently supported by BASF, which is interested in Pd-catalyzed cyclic olefin polymerizations.
