Project objective

Research objectives and content The objective of this project is to carry out theoretical and experimental research on the generation and control of temporal optical solitary-wave structures in a novel type of fibre Raman laser. The originality of our approach is intimately linked to the introduction of a dynamical model for the description of the interactions between the optical fields and matter. Comparison between theory and experiments will allow us to provide fundamental clues concerning the basic physical mechanisms that underlie the Raman scattering process in fibres. The nonlinear dynamics of modulational instability, as a universal pulse generation mechanism, will be investigated. New families of picosecond solitary waves that result from the interplay between optical fields and material excitations will be experimentally studied for the first time. Applications to picosecond pulse generation at ultrahigh repetition rates are envisaged. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The training content of the project is in pure and applied science problems related to long term applications in the field of optical telecommunications. Considering the competencies that exist in the host institution, the candidate is expected to gain new expertise in both experimental and theoretical nonlinear optics. In particular, he will benefit from training on ultrafast optical phenomena characterisation techniques and modern optical fibre technology. The candidate will also benefit from the numerous well-established international scientific and industrial collaborations of the host institution. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The present project has no direct links with any industrial partner.
