Project objective
Research objectives and content The overall aim of the research project is to study the prices that arise from the strategic interaction of agents in finite Arrow-Debreu exchange economies. The emphasis is on the strategic aspects of price formation. This includes not only the question of what prices are charged in equilibrium but also the question of what trade institutions are selected by the agents participating in the exchange process. An important part of the project is therefore concerned with the formulation of (1) an adequate space of trade institutions, which should include institutions such as those associated to posted prices, auctions, and bargaining, with or without intermediaries, and (2) a framework that deter- mines how the trade institutions are selected from the given space. This makes it possible to analyse the institutions and prices that arise in equilibrium, first, when agents have complete information about the environment, and then, when this information is incomplete and asymmetric. A final part of the project extends the analysis to an intertemporal framework with markets for financial assets and uncertainty about future states to see which trade institutions and prices arise here in equili- bruim. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Two main objectives are (1) to obtain a deeper understanding of financial markets from a general equilibrium perspective and in the presence of informational asymmetries, and (2) to gain further insight into structural properties of standard equilibrium concepts in game theory, especially with regards to the knowledge and information possessed by the agents. The quality of the research to be carried out as well as future research would greatly benefit from the possibility of working with Professors H.M. Polemarchakis, J.J. Gabszewicz, and J.F.
