Project objective

Research objectives and content The objectives are to find out the suitability of finite element codes widely used in European industry to deal with dynamic buckling behaviour of light-weight, impulsively loaded fiber composite shells, and to learn about this problem. Dynamic buckling is critical for safe operation, e.g. with landing of aircrafts, starting of launchers, and crash of land and water vehicles. Codes considered will be MSC/NASTRAN, MSC/DYTRAN, ABAQUS, DYNA3D, and PAMCRASH. Computations for cylindrical shells will be performed and evaluated with respect to - suitability of the codes considered, - modelling and solution methods, - influence of laminate set-up, - identification of unsafe operation due to critical interaction of loading and buckling dynamics. Experiments will be performed, and the results will be compared with numerical predictions. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The training contributes to my ability to deal with safe design of future light-weight structures. It is part of my specialisation to non-linear, time-dependent problems. I will learn how to computationally handle dynamic buckling problems of fiber composite shells, and profit from DLR's capacities concerning dynamic buckling tests. Dealing with DLR's MSC codes increases my basic experience with finite element systems. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The hosting group has ongoing collaboration with European industry concerning design guidelines against buckling of fiber composite shell structures.
