Project objective
Research objectives and content The research group has synthesized a set of dendrimeric structures with a single chromophore at the core of the dendritic structure. The excited state properties of these single object, single chain and single molecules will be investigated using a plate scanning confocal microscope coupled to an atomic force microscope (AFM). The AFM will locate the object deposited on a transparent surface and the scanning confocal fluorescence microscope coupled to an optical multichannel analyzer and to a single photon timing set up will allow in depth study of the excited state properties of the object. The role of the coupling between the 'arms' or branches and the excited state properties of the central core will be investigated. In a second step the electron transfer between a single donor and a single acceptor will be examined. The exact distance will be measured and manipulated. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The present proposal builds on my knowledge in photophysics, photochemistry, laser physics and spectroscopy which I received in my undergraduate and PhD program but extends it in a new dimension namely small domains and nanometer or subnanometer resolution. This will allow me to get acquainted with the recently developed scanning confocal and probe techniques and to develope new application to photochemistry, photophysics and photobiology.
