Project objective
Research objectives and content The focus of this project is on the effects of Coulomb interactions on the optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots. Quantum dots offer a unique laboratory to study the effects of correlation, which become more and more pronounced as the interaction between carriers is enhanced due to their localization. A realistic description of these systems (and their possible applications in optoelectronic devices) is precluded if one adopts oversimplified single-particle models without taking into account the effects of correlation. In our analysis of quantum dots, we intend to use as a starting point an approach that was developed by the group in Modena and applied successfully to quantum wires. This is based on the numerical solution of multiband Semiconductor Bloch equations, which allows to perform quantitative calculations of the optical spectra of realistic quantum wires. These studies have allowed to point out the dominant role of Coulomb correlation on the optical response of realistic wires. In this project it is planned to perform a similar analysis for quantum dots, and to extend the analysis to time-dependent scenarios which can be directly compared to experimental results obtained by femtosecond spectroscopy. The main part of my Ph.D. thesis is concerned with a formal description of free-carrier screening in non-equilibrium systems: thus, it will be possible to take advantage of such formalism within the present project. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The main contributions to my training will be the opportunity to learn about the theoretical modelling of low-dimensional structures. In particular, the experience of the host institution in the field of ultrafast optical response of semiconductor nanostructures will be of central importance for my scientific training.
