Project objective

Research objectives and content Cardiovascular disorders, in particular cardiac arrhythmias and ischemic heart disease are very common and one of the largest causes of death in the EU countries. The identification of patients at high risk for lethal arrhythmias and the detection of ischemia based on conventional diagnostic methods is often imprecise. High-resolution multichannel magnetocardiographic mapping (MCG) and body surface potential mapping (BSPM) are promising novel modalities to facilitate detailed noninvasive diagnostic information. Both methods provide accurate regional information about the electrical activity of the heart at a high time resolution. The project aims at developing new analysis techniques based on artificial neural networks for multichannel MCG and BSPM recordings. Diagnostic information related to cardiac arrhythmias and ischemia will be extracted and compared to clinical reference methods. During the project, 67-channel MCGs and 128-channel ECGs will be recorded in 80 patients with serious ventricular arrhythmias and 60 patients with acute and chronic ischemia using the unique facilities available at the BioMag laboratory at Helsinki University Central Hospital. The project will produce novel automated analysis software for multichannel MCG and BSPM recordings and is expected to demonstrate its clinical usefulness. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Training will be provided in recording and analysing high-resolution multichannel MCGs and BSPM. Both methods are available in only a few centers worldwide. In addition, the training will broaden the knowledge of the applicant on new biosignal analysis methods based on neural networks as well as on noninvasive diagnostics related to cardiac diseases. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The project creates possibilities for european biomedical engineering companies to implement new computerised diagnostic procedures for cardiac electromagnetic measurement systems. Helsinki University of Technology has a strong cooperation with Neuromag Ltd. (Helsinki, FI) and other european companies resulting in a mutual technology transfer.
