Project objective
Research objectives and content The project is to be carried out using ALEPH, one of four multipurpose detectors operating at the Large Electron Positron (LEP) storage ring at CERN, Geneva. The data sample taken by ALEPH resulting from large energy collisions at LEP will be used to search for supersymmetric Higgs bosons. The Higgs boson is a yet undiscovered particle which is predicted to exist by the theory as a by product of the process of spontaneous symmetry breaking. The work content will consist of participating in the data taking in con- nection with the responsibilities of the host institution and analysing the resulting data. The eventual goal will be to either significantly improve the limit on the supersymmetric Higgs boson masses or, if the masses are low enough to be in the energy range of LEP 2, to discover and precisely measure the properties of these particles. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The selection of the data will be optimised on Monte Carlo simulation. Powerful statistical methods will be used in the derivation of the mass lim- its. The analysis therefore brings valuable experience in searching for small signals; training which may become important in light of the proposed plan to build 'discovery' experiments using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
