Project objective

Research objectives and content During the last years the fabrication of size-quantized semiconductor and metal nanostructures has become possible. The purpose of this project is to study theoretically the effect of the electron spin on the electronic properties of finite nanostructures. For the semiconductor quantum dots nearly free electron models will be used whereas metal systems will be studied with ab initio methods. One of the goals is to study the ground state spin states as possibilities to manipulate them in external gate voltages, which can be used to change the shape of the quantum dot. Another goal is to calculate the conductivity through a dot and its relation to the spin-state of the dot. The manipulation of magnetic states with gate voltages would open up new possibilities for nanoelectronics . Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The applicant aims to learn and develop modern ab initio electronic structure calculation methods and learn more about the many-body physics of finite systems. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The experimental group (of the host institution) working on nanostructures has collaboration with the Finnish industry.
