Project objective
Research objectives and content It is proposed to apply recently developed non-perturbative techniques to the renormalization of composite operators which appear in effective Hamiltonians of the weak interactions. This project can be viewed as part of a general approach to the non-perturbative renormalization problem of QCD, based on numerical simulations and finite size techniques. As a result one may be able to determine various non-leptonic weak matrix elements to a good numerical precision and with controlled systematic errors. This is required for a better understanding of CP violation and to determine some of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) I expect to acquire or deepen my knowledge and technical skills in the following areas: 1) Perturbation theory, operator product expansions, renormalization group considerations 2) Monte Carlo algorithms for lattice QCD 3) Programming techniques on parallel computers 4) Finite size scaling techniques 5) Low energy phenomenology of weak interactions Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The host institution is part of the APE1000 project in collaboration with Alenia Industry aiming at the construction of a 5 1 Teraflop parallel computer of the APE series.
