Project objective
Research objectives and content A proper understanding of spatiotemporal chaos, i.e., deterministic chaosin extended systems, is lacking. Because these systems posses a large number of degrees of freedom, we need to combine concepts from statistical physics and dynamical system theory to describe them properly. A key observation is that the spatiotemporal chaotic states often are build upfrom localized structures with well-defined dynamics and interactions. We propose to study the role of these local structures in spatiotemporalchaos and construct effective models based on their properties. We intend to1) apply coarse graining to these effective models to obtain statistical quantities,2) compare the deterministic and statistical properties of these effectivemodels to the full dynamics, 3) study the nature of the nonequilibrium transitions between various laminarand chaotic states. This work builds on recent work of the applicant, funded by the NetherlandsOrganization for Scientific Research, on describing a new class of localstructures that play an important role in many statiotemporal chaotic states. The host institute participates in the EU research networks: 'Spatially Extended Dynamics' (ERBFMRXCT960010) and 'Patterns, Noise and Chaos' (ERBFMRXCT960085). Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The combination of concepts from statistical physics with dynamical systemtheory along the lines sketched in the proposal provides a splendid opportunityto advance both the skills of the applicant as well as our knowledge ofnonequilibrium systems.
