Project objective

Research objectives and content It is proposed to fabricate nanocapacitors, A monolayer of organic molecules will be assembled on an atomically flat gold substrate and subsequently patterned with a scanning probe microscope tip. The electrons from the tip will polymerise the the monolayer to create conjugated regions of nanometre size. The tip will then be used to populate the capacitor with a stnall number of holes, by means of controlled electron tunnelling. Tunnelling current against voltage characteristics will show up single electron tunnelling events at room temperature. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Training will be obtained in scanning probe technology, nanolithography, Langmuir Blodgett assembly, and in molecular electronics. As these new techllologies evolve, I will then be in a position to interface them to my home country Greece. My background has equipped me to make rapid progress during the training.
