Project objective

Research objectives and content The present project aims at developing new methods to create functional responsive surfaces. The stimuli responsive surface should be built by using polymers; in this way, following advantages could be obtained: - easy fixation, - high stability and good adhesion of coatings, - easy to incorporate additional functional groups, - multiplication of small effects give rise to strong stimuli-responsive behaviour. The system to study will be hydrogel fixed on two type of model s olid supports: - Sulfide-Gold System The method is confined to the selective chemisorption of polymers with reactive sulfides onto noble metal surface (gold) for building of multilayers. - Silanes-Silica system Similarly the chemisorption of reactive silanes onto silica surfaces will be studied, which consists in fixation by complexation with cationic polymers. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) This project will develop a new analytical equipment and sensor kit for biomedical analysis. A useful extension of the hydrogel coatings to be developed in this project would be 'smart', i.e. stimuli responsive coatings. The SME 'BioTuL Instruments' who coordinates the above mentioned network, would be interested in the commercialisation of such smart hydrogel surfaces. BioTuL Instruments is therefore ready to follow closely the project exploring ways to stimuli-responsive polymer coatings, and to give advise in its execution and in eventual exploitation of results. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The proposal is linked to the network 'Biosensing Devices Based on Novel Biochips and Tuning of Laser Diodes' (BioTul) in the EU programme 'Biotechnology'.
