Project objective

The objective of this project is to improve the fundamental understanding of the fracture mechanics and fatigue of ceramic matrix composites from room temperature to 12000C. The behaviour of matrix cracks have been characterised and quantified using novel new techniques being developed at QMW as part of the Marie Curie Fellowship Contract No ERBFMBICT960658, of which this returning grant will be the final part. It has been possible to investigate directly the effect of monotonic and cyclic loading on cracks. Unidirectional and cross-ply SiC fibre (Tyranno) reinforced composites, with glass ceramic matrix and SiC ceramic matrix have been studied using these techniques. The research project during the returning grant will attempt to realistically model the P(u) relationships and S-E behavior of these composites, after completion of the project being performed at QMW. This project was a logical extension of research performed at QMW on particulate ceramic composites (Brite-Euram Project No BRE2-CT94-0613, 'Development of High Temperature Creep, Fatigue and Thermal Shock Resistant Zircon and Mullite Zircon Ceramics'). The results and observations from this research provide a solid base of fundamental knowledge for the development of consistent and comprehensive models to predict the S-E (strength) and S-N fatigue behaviour of CMCs, as I, the applicant, intend when returning to Universidad de Sevilla.
