Efficient algorithms and data structures for problems on strings

Project objective

Research objectives and content The purpose of this proposal is twofold: 1. The study of algorithms, data structures and lower bound for combinatorial problems on strings. 2. Help the host institute with teaching theoretically oriented and applied programming classes in the newly established Bachelor program. The host institute has strong expertise in combinatorics on strings, formal languages, coding theory, image recognition and speech processing. Our plan is to pursue research that combines this knowledge with the research of the candidate on algorithms, data structure and lower bounds for combinatorial problems on strings. Such problems have applications in data compression, information retrieval, computational molecular biology, speech processing and image recognition. The applicant will collaborate with researchers and students at the host institute and teach a regular course and/or several shorter intensive courses in his areas of expertise. Examples of some, but not all, of the algorithmic research problems that be studied are: string matching, suffix trees, tree matching, two dimensional matching, shortest common superstring an supersequence, transducer and their applications. The collaboration is expected to be beneficial to the research of the applicant and of the researchers at the host institute, by combining the theoretical and the more practical skills of the two in developing new algorithms, data structures and lower bounds. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The candidate is expected to teach, according the needs of the host institute at the time of the stay, courses on programming data structures and algorithms, parallel algorithms and/or computational molecular biology.
