Project objective

Research objectives and content The need for efficient transmission and storage of audio-visual information has lead to international standards known as MPEG-1 (storage of audio-visual data) and MPEG-2 (digital TV). These standards are now followed by a new international effort in multimedia domain known as MPEG-4. This treats the audio-visual data in an object-based manner. Each scene consists of video objects that are encoded and decoded independently, allowing user interaction functionalities. The experience from my involvement in two ACTS projects (MoMuSys and AMPA) related to parallel architectures /MPEG-4, shows that the encoding for broadcasting of high quality images requires more powerful computational facilities than available today. Therefore a parallel object-based video encoder supporting MPEG-4 functionalities remains an open research problem. The proposed research will undertake developing scheduling algorithms for load balancing of a parallel object-based video encoder using a number of parallel processors in order to maintain real time requirements. Scalability and quality of service will be part of this project. Based on my previous work in MoMuSys and AMPA, the research to be undertaken will be part of my doctoral thesis at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Part of PhD studies. Advanced training in broadcast quality multimedia and parallel computing. Impact on Digital TV and generally in high quality broadcasting industry. In multimedia and telecommunication domains as the research has links with the future international standard MPEG-4 and related applications that will use this technology. Attend international conferences, MPEG-4 meetings, and submit papers working on a PhD thesis Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
