Project objective

Research objectives and content The global purpose of my doctoral work is the characterisation of the phenomenon of degradation induced in the soil by large cyclic angular deformation. Based on cyclic triaxial tests, I want to define a constitutive law describing the decrease of soil resistance in function of the plasticity index, the void ratio and the number of cycles when the soil is solicited by large amplitudes of cyclic deformation. This law will first be validated on basis of cyclic simple shear tests. Then, this law will be applied and validated with an industrial model describing the behaviour of the soil during the vibro driving of a sheet-pile, and the vibrocompaction at deep with a vibrating probe. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The main purpose of the stay at Norwegian Geotechnical Institute is the performance of cyclic simple shear tests. These tests will give me the opportunity to validate the constitutive law derived from the cyclic triaxial tests that I perform in our own laboratory. This validation will generalise the constitutive law. During my stay at N.G.I., I will benefit also from the experience of Dr Dyvik and Mr Andersen who have extensive knowledge about the soil behaviour under cyclic loading and about wave propagation in the soil.
