Project objective

Research objectives and content Large Eddy Simulation (LES) techniques have been given much attention over the last two decades. After a period at the academic stage, LES is now recognized as a high potential methodology for industrial simulation of turbulent now. Application to combusting flows has nevertheless not yet been acomplished, only tentative approaches have been reported Additional problems that have to be solved when combustion is to be simulated include large scale reaction rate modelling and coupling between turbulence and chemical reactions. In this project different approaches to LES of combustion are to be investigated, based on statistical modelling of small scale reaction and mixing trough the probability density function (PDF) methodology. With the final objective of application to industrial combustion systems, the performance and cost of the different approaches is to be evaluated. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The applicant has been working towards her PhD thesis in the area of modelling turbulent reacting flows, developing a methodology that combines LES with simulation of the evolution of the probability density function of reactants. As a first approach the method has been developed for the simplified case of constant density reacting flows. Extension to real combustion, that is. variable density flows with heat release, is the next step in her work.CERFACS provides an excellent frame for this work due to their recognised expertise in the field of combustion simulation and the strong activity towards LES of combustion they are developing with multiple partners in Europe. This stage at CERFACS would thus be a great opportunity for the applicant to work together with the European experts in the field.Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Both the host team and the applicants' team are involved in different European Projects with industrial partners aimed at developing LES simulations for combustion. Industrial interest and transfer of results to industry are thus guaranteed.
