Project objective

Research objectives and content Explosive boiling is a process of rapid phase transition from Liquid to vapour which occurs when the liquid is highly superheated. It has obvious practical importance for many industrial applications where an intimate contact between a hot nonvolatile liquid and a cold volatile liquid is possible. At present an exact theory of explosive boiling does not exist and our understanding of the problem! is mainly qualitative. There is therefore an urgent need to inprove existing models of this phenomenon we propose to study some of the fundamental processes controlling explosive boiling of liquid droplets in liquid and gas media. We shall investigate the growth of a vapour bubble within tbe droplet, the kinetics of evaporation at the superhead limit, and tbe hydrodynamics of the flow. the results will be compared with existing experimental data. This research should lead to better practical models for explosive boiling and better estimation of its characteristics and possible destructive effect. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact ) - Studying kinetic theory approach to the theory of evaporation- Acquiring better understanding of the physics of evaporation and vapour bubble growth- Gaining mdre experience in two-pbase flow calculations Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
