Project objective

Environmental magnetism involves measurement of the magnetic properties of The proposed environmental magnetic network aims to train the next environmental materials, including soils, sediments and dusts. The generation of researchers in the application of magnetic measurements to environmental issues. This will be achieved in several ways, including: (i) sensitivity of magnetic measurements enables detection of minute quantities of magnetic material which often act as proxies for the underlying providing young researchers with the mobility required to experience a wide environmental processes that control the properties of the materials under range of state-of-the-art measuring facilties; (ii) providing education in investigation. Magnetic techniques are highly sensitive proxies for climate the theory and interpretation of data obtained from magnetic and analytical in many environments. Anthropogenic pollution can also have a strong techniques through specially-designed advanced training workshops; (iii) magnetic signature and magnetic techniques have proven to be capable of providing education about the nature of environmental questions that discriminating between different sources of pollution. Climate and mineral magnetic methods can help to solve; (iv) providing training in conducting societally-important research in an interdisciplinary frontier pollution are scientifically important problems in Europe and a research field. network is proposed to address important climate and pollution issues by: (i) establishment of a European-wide magnetic database for unpolluted and polluted soils, to test the links between climate and soil magnetic properties and to define the natural background magnetic signal for quantification of pollution loadings; (ii) assessing climate variability by compilation of magnetic proxy data from natural climate archives (terrestrial, lacustrine and marine sediments); (iii) mapping and quantifying human health hazards from environmental pollution by anthropogenic aerosols; (iv) characterizing magnetic particles for mitigation of pollution by surface adsorption and storage of environmentally hazardous heavy metals and radionuclides; and (v) quantitative calibration of mineral magnetic measurements of natural materials against newly-produced control samples of known mineralogy and grain size. These goals will address important areas that will drive forward the field of environmental magnetism in a context that is beneficial for European society.
