Project objective
Research objectives and content: Solar System dynamics has recently been investigated by the use of fast computers which allow to simulate the evolutions of bodies on 109-years timescales. A new, generally unespected phenomenon has been pointed out to be very typical: the 'slow chaotic diffusion', i.e. a slow non-quasi-periodic change of some so called action variables, like eccentricity and inclination characterizing the orbits of the bodies around the Sun. If the new results change completely the view of astronomers concerning the Solar System evolution, a deep mathematical understanding of the phenomenon is missing. The goal of the present proposal is to fill such a gap using, as innovative approach, the rigorous results of Dynamical Systems Theory as a guideline to interpret the numerically observed behaviours. Training content: The expected results will have a relevant impact in both astronomy and mathematics. Astronomy will benefit of a better comprehension of the long-term Solar System evolution. Mathematics will benefit of a new approach for the application of results of the Dynamical Systems Theory to realistic models, which is always a hard task. Although the proposed research hasn't direct links with technology, such new approach can be relevant in all fields of applied dynamics, like beam dynamics in particles accelerators. Links with industry: none.
