Project objective
Excitability is one of the major mechanisms to produce pulses, spikes or solitary waves in non-linear systems. Since February 1995, I have been working on a new concept of excitability in Avalanche-Collapse processes, which develop where subcritical instabilities do not have enough energy to sustain the new state. The idea came from digging the basics of previous research by Prof M G Velarde on laser with saturable absorber and convection with prescribed heat flux (prescribed current not gradient). Thus, naturally, we started applying the new concept in optics, fluid mechanics and other topics like flame front propagation, suggesting new experiments. I plan to develop numerical simulation of avalanche collapse in extended systems, like the section of a laser beam, to study solitary wave behaviour. Connections with experiments are underway in collaboration with Prof. F.T.Arecchi, INO, Florence, Italy. Application to neuron dynamics is also considered.
