Project objective
In this project we propose to investigate the stability of one-dimensional CJ det- onations by use of analytic and numerical methods. The proposed investigation is intended to identify the physical mechanism triggering the oscillations in Chapman- Jouguet detonations, an issue that needs to be resolved before more complex ques- tions, concerning the generation of the three-dimensional cellular structures, can be addressed. First, the stability problem will be formulated and asymptotic methods will be employed to derive the equation (or equations) that govern the dynamical behavior of CJ detonations. Solution to the problem will provide the stability limits and exhibit the parametric dependence of the solution. In addition to a suitable model previously developed for the study of overdriven detonations, reduced hydrogen- oxygen chemistry will be employed to obtain the heat-release rate in the shocked gas. Comparisons with results of direct numerical simulations will be made to test the parametric dependence and the accuracy of the predictions obtained by the asymptotic analysis.
