Project objective

Research objectives and content The proposed work deals about the elaboration and experimental study of quantum transport in one-dimensional systems (1D). Two kinds of structures were chosen to study these systems. The first one is based on two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with high mobility. It can be found at the interface of GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. In these kinds of structures the mean free path can be 10 -15 um at low temperature. The second structure in which is possible to find one-dimensional properties, is based on carbon nano-tubes, they can be empty or filled with Se, S, Sb, Ge. Carbon nano-tubes are synthesised using the standard arc-discharge evaporation of carbon in an argon-filled vessel, and are grown on the negative end of carbon electrode. A single nano-tube can be seen as the rolling up of a graphite sheet about the axis, each structure (needle) can comprise coaxial tubes of graphite sheets, ranging in number from 1 up to about 50 and their diameter ranges from 4 to 30 nm with a length up to 1 um. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) We will study the physical properties demonstrating that these structures show typical characteristics of Luttinger liquid, besides we can study these systems in tunnel regime to show Coulomb-blockage and to study electron transport properties in one-dimensional systems. This last study is relevant for the possibility to use these systems in nano- electronic structures and in the new technologies. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
