Youth Action against Racism and Social Inequality: Youth Associations in the Inner Cities. Comparison of GB, FR and IT

Project objective

Research objectives and contentIn the inner cities of European towns young people live in conditions of inequality and exclusion. If they are ethnic minorities they are often victims of racism unemployment, the erosion of welfare, and the development of social control. Poverty and racial tension are both to be found in GB, FR and IT. Young people are the prime victims of this situation. Nevertheless young people are able to react, organising social activities and self help associations.In each country these activities have specific characteristics. This project will focus on the study of organisations: the activities, the social impact, the functions and leadership of these associations. The empirical work will be carried out through qualitative methods, in particular interviews and participation observationIn this study we will compare these associations in three towns-Milan, Lyon and Birmingham.The research will build upon work already carried out on youth associations in Lyon and Milan, and develop new field work in Birmingham.Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)The applicant will develop new theoretical knowledge on ethnic minority youth mobilisation, and original empirical material. The study will be useful to understand how young disadvantaged ethnic minority people are le to cope with the welfare crisis, persistent unemployment and race discrimination. The comparison of three European countries will bring an insight into the relationship and potential conflict between institutions and ethnic minority/disadvantaged youth.Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
