Deferring Disclosure of HIV-Positive Serostatus towards Support Institutions: A Comparative Analysis of the United Kingdom and Spain

Project objective

Research objectives and content Voluntary disclosure of serostatus is a precondition for the effectiveness of any institutional support scheme for persons with HIV or AIDS. Yet even though such institutions guarantee support regardless of moral considerations, some among the HIV-positive defer disclosure for many years despite ongoing severe crisis sub| sequent to diagnosis. The existing literature with its focus on moral discrimination is unable to explain this crucial phenomenon.The proposed project aims at laying the ground for measures which would improve the quality of life and social integration of persons with HIV or AIDS by:- conducting innovative fieldwork in a variety of social and institutional settings in two countries of the European Union, including the country with the highest HIV incidence;- paying particular attention to the potentially disruptive effects of the image of imminent death which used to be associated to the diagnosis of HIV or AIDS throughout the pandemic's first decade;- exploring new policy options in the context of the present trend toward the infection's chronification, especially with regard to the work of and access to support agencies.Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)Training will result in a qualitative leap of the applicant's research skills because the preparation and conduct of fieldwork will be realised with the support of a host institution distinguished by outstanding teaching potential for advanced social science research techniques (both in the form of workshops and project specific support) and international reputation in comparative health services and health policy research.Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Not applicable.
