Project objective
Several modern single crystal growth technologies work with a well-defined melt flow control by external magnetic fields. Rotating magnetic fields turned out to be very attractive since they can effectively homogenize the melt and suppress flow oscillations. The central idea of the project proposal is to complement the action of the rotating magnetic field in order to extend its range of flow stability. Two cases will be studied for it: superposition of a steady magnetic field and an additional rotation of the melt crucible. Preliminary results of the applicant suggest that in both cases a significant flow stabilization can be obtained, and the combination of a rotating magnetic field with a crucible rotation provides flow control possibilities which are qualitatively not accessible by external magnetic fields. The study of these flow control problems needs a coupled effort of experiment and theory. Experiments on flow stability and turbulent properties of such magnetically controlled flows exist at the host institute. With the proposed project they should be supported by theoretical and numerical investigations of the applicant who is one of the leading experts in this field. The knowledge transfer will consist in the theoretical modeling of those flows as well as their numerical implementation. A numerical simulation of rotating flows and their stability requires a tailored numerical approach which standard commercial codes cannot provide. The applicant offers exactly this.
