Project objective

The research objectives of the project encompass a direct contribution to a realistic prototype of the ATLAS trigger system. The applicant would participate strongly in the development of algorithm and associated framework software for the second-level trigger. She would also participate in making performance measurements and interpreting the results. The conclusions of this work will be important elements in making decisions for the trigger design, which will influence the physics potential of ATLAS. The selection algorithms are crucial in the trigger since they must keep the interesting processes while rejecting the undesirable events. These algorithms would be developed in close collaboration with other ATLAS groups as many different event properties should be taken into account. The key roles of this software are event selection and event classification. To perform this, abstract objects such as electrons, lets and muons, are reconstructed for every event. Trigger menus then allow one to perform the selection and classification based on the reconstructed objects of the event. The second- level trigger framework software is the general structure of the system and it may provide common services. An important requirement on this software is that it should be fast enough to form and distribute the second-level trigger decision on time.
