Project objective

Applications are invited from doctoral students involved in the synthesis and study of molecular and nanostructured systems to undertake a training period in state-of-the-art nanosclence at the University of Nottingham. The Nanoscience group(www.nottingham.ac.uk/-ppzstm) is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy, providing a dynamic multidisciplinary research environment with rising postgraduate student numbers. Furthermore, both the Nanoscience group and the School as a whole have a strong history of successful training of postgraduate students from the EU and overseas. The doctoral fellow would receive training in a range of areas currently at the cutting edge of nanoscientific research including:- scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and SPM-based manipulation of individual molecules (the Nanoscience group were the first in the world to demonstrate controlled single molecule manipulation at room temperature). The group has a wide variety of in-house constructed and commercial scanning probe instrumentation available including facilities for atomic force microscopy, scanning capacitance microscopy, electric force and magnetic force microscopy, and photon emission scanning tunneling microscopy.- electrical transport and low level optical measurements of nanostructures and adsorbed molecules;- fullerene, carbon nanotube and novel organic systems;- lithography and device fabrication;- synchrotron radiation-based spectroscopies. The group is currently involved in a broad variety of multidisciplinary collaborations, at both national and international level, involving Schools of Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences and Phamaceutical Sciences. We are keen to expand this multidisciplinary activity and thus would particularly welcome applications from doctoral students whose background lies in disciplines outside physics. The group and the University of Nottingham provide an extensive range of training courses focused on the development of both technical and transferable (communication, presentation techniques) skills.
