Anaerobic microbiology and molecular immunology of the digestive tract

Project objective

The European Commission has designated the Rowett Research Institute as a Marie Curie Training Site for Gut Microbiology and Immunology. Applications are invited from postgraduate students undertaking a Ph.D. on a related topic in a member state to spend 6-12 months at the world-renowned institute located in Aberdeen, Scotland. The student will join 180 research staff and 50 Ph.D. students at a pleasant location on the outskirts of Aberdeen. The training will cover a broad range of techniques relating to the biology of the gut and its microbial population, including- Anaerobic bacteriology by classical Hungate culture technique- Newer anaerobic chamber technologies- Rumen and human-intestine simulation fermenters- Molecular population analysis technology- Molecular phylogenetic analysis of anaerobic bacteria- Molecular phylogenetic analysis of ciliate protozoa- Transformation techniques for anaerobic gut bacteria- Assessment of immune status and barrier function of the gut epithelium in response to bacterial challenges- Chemical analysis of gut fermentation products In addition to these topics, formal instruction will be given in statistical analysis, information storage and retrieval, and the preparation of scientific material oral presentation and for publication. Applicants will also be expected to participate in one of the ongoing research programmes in gut microbiology and immunology, pursuing one of the above topics in greater depth.
