Project objective

IPG (Institute of Physics of the Globe) in Paris has a long-standing tradition in instrumentation field experiments, observatories maintenance and geophysical processes theoretical and numerical modeling. It is in charge of a Doctoral School with 20 Masters students and 120 PhD students. The geomagnetism Laboratory of IPG is one of its departments. It is devoted to different aspects of the geomagnetic field (observations from local to satellite, data analysis and core-flow reconstructions. modeling of the mechanisms for field generation). This research is achieved through active collaboration with many academic institutions around the world. The Geomagnetism Lab is providing research facilities (a computer network of some 15 UNIX workstations; unlimited access to IPGP computing center, i.e. a cluster of 32 alpha processors and a cluster of 8 PCs for parallel computations) to 18 permanent researchers and engineers. Its scientific activity is focused on field observation through magnetic observatories and investigations associated with satellite programs (Oersted, Champ, Ampere project,... ), and on core processes modeling (including Geodynamo theory) .The observations are complemented by efficient processing ( core flow reconstructions, short impulses detection with wavelet analysis, . .).The theoretical group is concerned both with analytical developments and with intensive numerical computing; Investigations cover various time scale phenomena associated with precession thermal history of the core and Geodynamo modeling.
