Marie curie fellowships in crystallographic methods for crystal structure determination

Project objective

The National Research Council (CNR), through IRMEC (Research institute for the development of crystallographic methods) is offering some fellowships mainly focused onto the study and development of crystallographic methods. An opportunity of training in this area will be offered to post-graduate fellows in Physics, Chemistry, Geological Sciences to improve their knowledge of methods and techniques in crystallography. Their activities will be focused mainly on crystal structure solution, powder diffraction data analysis, and properties of policrystalline materials, quantitative analysis and study and development of techniques for proteins structure determination. The fellows will be hosted at CNR IRMEC, a Institute of the Italian National Research Council, where they will join a group of researchers and PhD students. Fellows will be expected to attend and to give seminars and to be fully integrated into the scientific activities of the Institute, having thus the opportunity of joining one of the major European groups in crystallography, with an outstanding research reputation.Research opportunities will be offered in the following areas :- development of new methods for abinitio crystal structure solution (small- and macro-molecules);- study and development of MIR (multiple isomorphous replacement) and MAD (multiple wavelength anomalous dispersion) techniques for proteins;- development of innovative techniques for the treatment of powder diffraction data.Methods for crystal structure solution, completion and refinement are also developed;- quantitative analysis in terms of crystalline phases from powder diffraction data (Rietveld Method);- development of software packages which implement the theoretical results. The CNR IRMEC institute is located in Bari, Italy.
