Coherent control in matterwaves and quantum optics

Project objective

Fellowships are available at a Marie-Curie Training Site, jointly operated by two closely collaborating groups (Fleischhauer, theory and Bergmann, experiment) at the Physics Department, University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Kaiserslautern is located in the south-west of Germany in close distance to cities like Heidelberg and Mainz. The picturesque campus, located at the edge of a large wooded recreational area (Pfaelzerwald) and in 30 minutes walking distance to the center of the city of 100 000, is home of 8000 students.-- The joint research of the two groups, concentrates on the development and application of their recent Pioneering work in the coherent control of matter waves and nonlinear processes In quantum optics [see Rev.Mod.Phys. 70, 1003 (1998), J.Chem.Phys. 113, 534 (2000), Phys.Rev.Lett. 84, 5094 (2000), Phys.Rev.Lett 86, 783 (2001)]. Experimental work will focus on new schemes for imprinting infonnation into superposition states, on a laser-based matter wave interfero-meter for molecules and on new concepts for efficient frequency conversion. Theoretical work will focus on novel schemes of resonantly enhanced 4-wave mixing and on nonlinear processes on the level on individual light quanta, on new schemes of quantum information processing and the application of those techniques for the development of tools for matter wave optics and slow" light.-- A lively research atmosphere, high level of funding, excellent equipment, and high international visibility is characteristic for both groups. The trainees will benefit not only from the special lecture courses but also from the exposure to high-level international scientists and the ongoing extensive national and international collaborations."
