Project objective
In the Laboratory for Optical Biosciences (LOB) of the Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau, France, fellowships up to 1 year are available for PhD students, in the framework of the Marie Curie Host Fellowships Program of the European Commission (Marie Curie Training Site). Research at this Training Site concerns Functional Dynamics of Proteins. In particular, but not exclusively, we study proteins involved in bioenergetics and in a signal transduction (NO and 02 sensing). Research at the LOB includes a broad variety of approaches and skills involved in the study of ultra fast dynamics of protein systems. This range from molecular biology and biochemistry to advanced femtosecond spectroscopy, and also include numerical simulation tools. Accordingly, a very important aspect of the work is its multidisciplinary character. We aim at receiving fellows both with a background in (bio)physics and in particular in time-resolved spectroscopy with an interest in studying protein systems, as well as fellows with a background in biochemistry or molecular biology, interested in biophysical characterization. For fellows with background in biology, the LOB offers training not only in techniques of microbiology molecular biology and biochemistry but provides the unique possibility to achieve and link these competences to the existing spectroscopic techniques. For fellows with a (bio)physical background, the training aims at getting acquainted with and developing tools to study dynamics in protein systems on the time scale of their internal motions. Hands-on experience can be obtained on several systems used for ultra fast absorption and emission spectroscopy in the visible, near- and mid-infrared, and Terahertz regions, using non-linear and coherent optical techniques. The LOB has over 20 full-time researchers with a broad range of scientific backgrounds, and a strongly international character. Both genders are strongly represented.
