Training and research in the field of spectroscopic and computational charachterization of heterogeneous catalysts

Project objective

The Physical Chemistry Group, part of the Department of Inorganic, Physical, and Materials Science seeks candidates for Marie Curie fellowships at the post-graduate level, in the areas of surface science and catalyst characterization. The group is a recognized leader in the field surface studies using an interdisciplinary approach. Scientific activity is focused on two main research directions:a) the characterization of the structure and reactivity of active sites in zeolites and other solid catalysts by means of concurrent spectroscopic and theoretical methods, andb) the study of simple oxide surfaces with varying shape and defectivity, in order to bridge the gap between single crystal studies and studies on real catalysts. The techniques available are: IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies of probe molecules at surfaces under carefully controlled atmosphere and temperature, fluorescence spectroscopy, electron and AFM microscopies, adsorption studies, catalyst testing in gas-phase reactor, XANES, EXAFS and diffraction studies using synchrotron radiation (at the nearby Grenoble facility), abinitio and atomistic modeling of molecular and crystalline systems. The candidate fellow should be a post-graduate student with interest in one of the above mentioned research areas. Stays are available in Torino for periods of 3 to 12 months, upon mutual agreement of a research and training program between the hosting staff and the candidate's supervisor. The program may concern the study of a particular material, reaction or a methodological issue. The candidate will be able to take advantage of all courses held at the University of Torino (including language courses).
