Lipomics : genomics of lipid metabolism

Project objective

Applications are invited from PhD students that have been graduated in either Genetics/Molecular or Cell Biology/Biochemistry, or Information Technology/Computer Science. A strong interest in the study of intracellular mechanisms controlling lipid and energy metabolism or application of information technology to life sciences is desired. For applicants with background in life sciences experience with cell lines and transfection studies is a plus. For applicants with information technology background, JAVA programming, Perl, or LINUX knowledge is required. The life science applicant can choose one of the following areas: adipogenesis, angiogenesis, yeast lipid metabolism, electrophysiology, and lipid metabolism in transgenic animals. She/he will actively participate in designing and performing the experiments as a member of a group of 3-4 persons. The trainee will acquire experience in general molecular and cell biology techniques as well as bioinformatics and genomics. The information technology applicant will focus on bioinformatics, i.e. developing and implementing methods for large-scale gene expression analysis and functional annotation of gene products. The trainee will acquire experience in software and database design as well as exposure to general molecular biology techniques. The training is provided by an internationally recognized group of 55 researchers from the SFB (Spezialforschungsbereich) Biomembranes at the Technical University Graz and University of Graz. Within the SFB Biomembranes, central facilities include micro array laboratory, bioinformatics environment, microscopy, transgenic facilities, and mass spectrometry.
