Project objective
Most of European chemical industry faces major challenges in the problem of improving efficiency and productivity, and at the same time minimizing environmental and ecological effects. At the technological level at which the industry operates today, very sophisticated modeling tools and experiments are needed for improving the eco- efficiency, and at the same time maintaining or improving the productivity and efficiency of the processes. These design and optimization tools must be based, as far as possible, on a first-principles approach. that is, on a sound theoretical foundation. The doctoral training at the training site focuses directly on the heart of these problems: detailed CFD-based modeling of chemical reactors, as the heart of the processes, combined with development of new methods for design and optimization of process and handling of environmental effects like CO_2-emissions. The ECOCHEM Marie Curie Training Site in Trondheim welcomes researchers from EU countries who will address the challenges of design, optimization and control of environmentally friendly and efficient industrial processes for a stay of 6-12 months. Particularly industrial researchers or industry relevant research is welcome, and we also especially encourage women to apply. Research is carried out in many subject areas, especially gas absorption, gas cleaning operations, thermodynamics, drying, membrane technology, computer aided modeling, Process control, reactor technology, single and multiphase flow modeling, petro chemistry, polymer chemistry, surface- and colloid chemistry, reaction kinetics and catalysis. However, in all cases the primary goal is to increase eco- efficiency while still maintaining or improving the raw material utilization in the processes so that waste product and CO2 emission are minimized. NTNU-SINTEF is Europe's largest research group working with the chemical industry. We can offer a friendly and well-organized work environment at a high scientific level, very well equipped laboratories and computer facilities including direct access to the Norwegian national supercomputer centre facility, allowing large mathematical problems to be solved within reasonable time limits.
