Project objective

The goal of this proposal is to organize a coordinated effort between university and industry partners to study the fundamental limits and possibilities of ultra fast spin- and magnetization dynamics and switching and to explore the potentials of newly developed switching mechanisms for applications in magnetic and magneto-optic data storage and retrieval. Traditionally, the process of magnetization reversal, which is the basis of all applications of magnetic or magneto-optic data storage, is considered to be a relatively slow process limited by domain wall motion and/or spin-lattice relaxation times (~0.1- 1 ns). The development of femtosecond lasers however has opened a completely new area in magnetization dynamics that has delivered exciting results like laser-induced changes in magnetic properties on a picosecond timescale. We will address this exciting and challenging new field by a combined experimental and theoretical approach by leading groups in the fields of spin-electronics and dynamics, organized along the following lines:1. Optical excitation of magnetic systems far above their Curie or Neel temperature2. Generation and shaping of ultra fast magnetic field pulses3. Exploration of fast polarized current induced switching The results of these studies will contribute to the understanding of spin and magnetization dynamics beyond the spin lattice relaxation, will have important implications for high speed magnetic recording and reading, will promote transnational cooperation between research teams and will in this way also promote the scientific and technological cohesion of the community.
