Project objective

Industry as a whole is facing ever more complicated problems where mathematics appears a key technology in solving them. For the glass industry there is the additional problem that modeling has not been used enough as of yet. This proposal aims at stimulating mathematical modeling for this branch of industry. It appears moreover a rich and extremely interesting area, where mathematical research should be done, much to the benefit of both disciplines! The objectives of this network therefore are :( i) mapping out the research areas where mathematics and computing can contribute to obtaining a proper insight in glass manufacturing processes for innovation, improvement of optimization of the production of glass products,(ii) training of young researchers in this area,( iii) being a focal point for the stimulus for new exciting areas of research in applied mathematics and computing( iv) dissemination and exploitation of the results both in academia and industry from a mathematical point of view, the research that is needed, relates to mathematical modeling, partial differential equations, asymptotic analysis, inverse problems and computational mathematics, in particular large scale computing for simulation. Through the industrial partners there will be clear impact from engineering as well. Typically questions are brought to the mathematics community at study groups and workshops. Some of those problems are quite generic in nature, others more typical for glass industry as such. To ensure a strong interaction between the partners there is a clear work plan and effective management for the network. An important aspect is the involvement of industry; in particular, two of the nodes are industries. There are two major instruments to achieve these goals: One is to employ intensive workshops for discussing problems and progress. The other is the way title training programme of the postdocs has been designed
