Project objective

The Volkswagen Group is one of the largest globally active automotive manufacturers with worldwide sales exceeding 5. 1 million units in 2000. Volkswagen Group's annual turnover exceeded 82 bn EUROS in 2000 with an expenditure for R&D of approx. 4. 1 bn EUROS. Volkswagen's aim is to produce vehicles with ever increasing quality, safety and technology standards and at the same time reduce fuel consumption and emission levels. For the future, intensive research and development activities are planned in the field of numerical simulation and modeling of power train (combustion engine and fuel cell) and vehicle performances. Volkswagen's Group Research is working on every field of automotive application and is responsible for identifying, evaluating and transferring innovative technologies to advanced engineering or series development departments of all brands of the Volkswagen Group. Currently, the Group Research has a staff of 500 employees; in addition, 35 doctoral candidates and about 60 students are involved in scientific work. The Group Research has links to research institutes of all brands all over the world. The Engine Thermodynamics Department is well equipped with engine test beds, transparent engines, a constant volume pressure chamber and a new optical laser flow laboratory. The department has 25 members and is divided into three working groups: engine testing (gasoline and Diesel), CAD modeling and the CFD group. The members of the CFD group come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from engineers to physicist and chemists. The Fuel Cell Systems research department has 18 members, which are mostly high-educated scientists from a variety of Universities and Institutes.
