Project objective

The proposal is concerned with the ways in which electronically excited molecules transfer energy into other forms as the result of non-adiabatic coupling, the chemical consequences of which have wide-ranging significance from atmospheric chemistry to the function of photo biological systems. The flow of energy is observable in both the translational energy of the nuclei and in the photoelectron spectrum of the excited states by imaging methods. We propose to link leading European laboratories and instrument manufacturers, with appropriate and complementary expertise in this area, to develop new experimental probes of the dynamics of excited states. We will investigate a range of phenomena from the photochemistry and strong field ionization of di- and tri-atomic molecules to internal conversion and intersystems crossing in polyatomic organic molecules. We will also probe the effects of solvation with experiments in, and on, the surfaces of rare gas clusters and also in the medium of super fluid liquid He droplets where novel chemistry is observed.
