Pathophysiology of voice disorders in professional and amateur speakers and singers-with reference to vocal fold elasticity, microcirculation and gene expression

Project objective

Five to 15% of the population suffers from voice problems caused by major or subtle changes ( e.g. induration) of the vocal folds. Hoarseness and limited speaking power is the consequence. These changes are frequently the result of an increased noise level followed by voice abuse. The mechanism of emergence is not known in detail. Histological analysis after removal of (benign) lesions, e.g. nodules the most common cause diagnosed in voice patients, can not explain single steps of the course of the change found in the vocal folds. The overall goal of this proposal emphasizes on the pathophysiology of voice disorders. Three carefully selected groups will be examined, i.e. healthy individuals(1 ), amateur and professional singers and speakers before and after voice load(2) and patients with voice problems before and after operation of benign laryngeal lesions(3). Measurements of vocal fold elasticity and vocal fold microcirculation using highly sensitive equipment will be used as high speed camera and the Laser Doppler system. Moreover, gene expression receptor analyses will be performed focusing on oestrogen receptors.
