Project objective

The training need in the field or ceramic multilayers is justified from the fact that these materials behave profoundly different from traditional metallic materials. Moreover, layered ceramics are at the basis of established as well as emerging technologies (MEMS). The project will establish a strong European research-training network in structural integrity of ceramic multilayers, ceramic coatings and functionally graded ceramics devoted to the microstructural and mechanical characterization of these materials. The programme is designed to build upon the expertise of the participating groups to develop a leading competitive position, by an integrated use of basic and applied science, in an area of major importance. Objectives of networking in training can be stated as:- Train young researchers at pre-doctoral and postdoctoral levels in issues involving structural reliability of multilayered ceramic structures and coatings.- Bring together research groups working in areas of(i) structural integrity of ceramics and(ii) processing of multilayered laminates and coatings, to work in a common research project to understand the failure mechanisms in structures made by dissimilar materials. As coatings and layered materials are processed by recourse to different techniques, the training provides an insight on the relationship between mechanical degradation.
