Project objective
With the proposed project the applicant should be enabled to expand his current field of work studying activity and dynamo mechanisms in solar-type stars, and to establish a new scientific field in the EU measuring magnetic fields in substellar objects (brown dwarfs). Having worked in European institutes the outgoing international fellowship should provide the applicant with international experiences and contacts important for a career as researcher and teacher. Research on activity in solar-type stars is established in EU institutes, research on magnetic fields in brown dwarfs has never been studied yet and would enhance EU scientific excellence. For the next few years only one telescope worldwide is suitable to carry out the observations required for these studies (Keck). At the Astronomy Department of UC Berkeley access to this telescope would be provided to the applicant. Telescope access is simplified for collaborators at Berkeley and both parts of the proposed project could be extensively studied. After Phase I in Berkeley the applicant would return to Hamburg in Phase II. At this time data could also be obtained from a telescope inside the European Research Area (CRIRES at the VLT, ESO, available in 2005). With the experiences and collaborations gained during Phase I the applicant would be enabled to establish the new scientific field inside the EU. This field would connect working areas of a number of European institutes. In solar-type stars differential rotation, i.e. different rotational velocities at the Pole and the Equator, should be searched for using methods successfully implemented and published by the applicant. In the substellar regime magnetic fields of brown dwarfs should be measured. For this part the applicant's methods would provide the key mechanisms of the yet impossible analysis. The proposed project should clarify stellar generation of magnetic fields and their connection to activity phenomena, which also determine the future of the Sun.
